Care of the Critically Ill
Instructions for authors
The editor is happy to consider original articles, review articles, case reports, letters, notices of meetings etc for publication in Care of the Critically Ill.
The journal is aimed at all those involved in critical care medicine whether they be doctors, nurses, scientists, technicians, engineers or administrators. In practice, this embraces the work of A & E departments, coronary care units and the various specialised intensive care units, especially those catering for adults, neonates and paediatric patients. To simplify the preparation of the text, in the style of the publication, we would be most grateful if authors would follow the guidelines set out below:
The style should be lively, concise, readable and to the point.
- Texts should be typed with double spacing and a wide margin on A4. Two copies will be required. A title page should give the title of the article, surname, first name, and degrees of all authors and their professional address. The text should conform to the Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts submitted to biomedical journals (“Vancouver Style”). If a word processor is used to produce the article, an additional copy should be supplied on disk (high density for Apple computers), stating the computer and the word processing package used. To enable the text to be accessed a copy should be saved in ASCII or text only format.
- A summary or stand-first should be provided in which the content of the article is summarised in a few lines using no more than 80 words. This will aid the reader and provide appropriate text for inclusion in an abstract or retrieval system. Between 3-6 keywords should be supplied for indexing purposes -these should not include words from the title of the article.
- Presentation is aimed at emphasising the important aspects of each contribution. Headings and sub-headings should therefore be used.
- References will be identified by numbers in parenthesis in the text and should conform to the “Vancouver Style”. They should not exceed 40 in number.
- Units of measurement will be S.I. with traditional units in parenthesis where appropriate.
- Tables and illustrations should be attached as separate A4 sheets. The legends should be typed on these sheets. Illustrations may take the form of line drawings which may be mono or coloured, or glossy photographs or slides which may be coloured or black and white. They must be of high quality and, if unsatisfactory, may be rejected.
Each author is asked to supply a “potted biography”, including degrees and qualifications, title of post occupied, place of work or employing authority and other relevant information.
The majority of articles will be commissioned. Submitted papers of a review type and original articles and case reports, news and notices of meetings etc will be considered for publication. Where any doubt exists, the editor's advice should be sought.
All manuscripts must be submitted exclusively to Care of the Critically Ill and must not have been published previously. The copyright of all published material will belong to the journal.
Each author of a main article (i.e. other than book reviews) will be provided with one print, which the author will be entitled to photocopy for his personal use or to satisfy requests from professional colleagues.
The journal pays an honorarium of £100 to authors of commissioned articles on publication. Authors of editorials receive £40. Alternatively authors can request 50 free reprints prior to publication.
Papers should be sent to:
